How To Light Your Kitchen Like A Pro

Often times when we’re remodeling our kitchen or even starting to build one from scratch, we don’t think of the lighting situation until it's merely an afterthought. Design and planning your kitchen should be the first phase in your remodeling process. Choosing the right light and the right placement of lighting can drastically change the accent of your kitchen. Lighting designers are known for using three types of lighting functions that are crucial for good lighting design.

General Light Source:

The first one being a general light source. 6” recessed canned lights are a great choice for a general light source. Recessed lights with LED bulbs is by far the best choice nowadays when it comes to cost saving energy efficient bulbs. LEDs provide up to 60,000 hours of continuous light and also don’t take time to warm up! They are the “greenest” choice you can make to help keep your carbon footprint in check.

Task Lighting:

The second component of lighting to really light your kitchen like you know what your doing is task lighting. This is when you place fluorescent light over an area where tasks are performed. Makes sense right? This could be your kitchen sink or stove top. Maybe you want to place task lighting over your island where you prepare food. Knowing and planning your kitchen’s functional design and how it will be used in real time will help you strategically place your task lighting.

Accent Lighting:

Now accent lighting may not always be necessary but when incorporated tastefully, it can really bring some life and personality to your kitchen. An easy way to add accent lighting into your kitchen is by placing fixtures underneath your cabinets that cast an LED light onto a piece of art. Of course if you can add natural light into your accent lighting then that is a win-win and it sounds like to me you’ve got this lighting thing down.

The best thing you can do when remodeling or building your kitchen from scratch is really plan ahead.By incorporating these 3 lighting functionalities it will bring your kitchen to life and tie it all together!
